East China Prepares for Typhoon Pulasan

As Typhoon Pulasan approaches, Zhejiang Province in East China is taking necessary precautions. This marks the 14th typhoon of the year, with expectations of gales and rainstorms.
As of 9:30 AM Thursday, the province raised its typhoon alert to Level III. Consequently, all 72 passenger ferry routes in Zhoushan have been suspended. In Ningbo, 20 coastal construction projects have been halted, and 352 vessels have been moved to safe waters for shelter.
The China Meteorological Administration issued a yellow alert for Typhoon Pulasan on Thursday morning. At 10 AM, Pulasan was located over the East China Sea, approximately 320 km southeast of Xiangshan County in Ningbo. The typhoon is forecast to move northwest at speeds of 40-45 km/h and will likely intensify.
Landfall is expected in the coastal area from Xiangshan in Zhejiang to Pudong in Shanghai on Thursday afternoon or evening.
"This year, typhoons have been particularly active. Since September 1st, four typhoons have formed, three of which impacted China," said Zhu Xuesong, a researcher at the Shanghai Typhoon Institute of the China Meteorological Administration. "The unusual activity is attributed to abnormal subtropical high pressure."
Typhoon Bebinca, the 13th of the year, made landfall in Shanghai on Monday, marking the strongest typhoon to hit the city in 75 years. Last week, Super Typhoon Yagi, the strongest autumn typhoon to hit China since 1949, resulted in four fatalities and 95 injuries in Hainan.
Zhu emphasized that the fast movement and high moisture content of Pulasan could lead to significant rainfall, urging residents to remain cautious.
China employs a four-level emergency response system and a four-tier color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe level, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.
